Welcome to the Missouri State University-West Plains AAUP (American Association of University Professors) chapter. The national AAUP emerged around 100 years ago to protect the free speech rights of academics who were being fired for speaking against the government line during America's involvement in World War One.
From there, the AAUP developed to protect academic freedom, promote shared governance, and protection of faculty's economic security. The AAUP also provides a wealth of experience to tap into. It is on the AAUP "Red Book" standards that our Faculty Handbook (and hundreds of others across the nation) is based; it is from AAUP procedures and time-tested practices that faculty have strengthened their departments and relationships with administration and with each other; it is from the AAUP's "best practices" that we draw to shape faculty expectations and professional standards.
Our officers:
- President: Jason McCollom
- Secretary-Treasurer: Ana Estrella
From the national AAUP: "When you join the AAUP, you become a part of higher education's most influential voice. Together, we defend academic freedom. We affirm the importance of faculty governance. We pursue economic security for all faculty. As the face of the academic workforce changes, we organize to make our standards a reality."
