Modality refers to the delivery method of a class, detailing how students will interact
with course materials and instructors. Modality is determined by the academic unit
offering the course and will be reflected in the class schedule and registration system.
Faculty are invited to explore the range of modality options in direct collaboration
with academic unit leaders. Academic unit leaders should consult with the Office of
the Registrar for class scheduling support. Advisors should contact academic unit
leaders for information regarding a particular class's modality, when the general
information below will not suffice.

Fully in-person courses are designed for face-to-face on instruction. Faculty and
students meet on a regularly scheduled basis and interact in real-time.
Faculty and students meet on a regularly scheduled basis remotely and interact in
real-time. Video conferencing tools such as Zoom are used to facilitate this online
interaction.
Course content is available to students to access online without expectation of immediate
interaction. Students are not required to attend any set meeting times.
Course is offered with two different modalities. The different modalities are not
offered simultaneously. Students must attend both modalities as defined.
The hybrid combination is determined by the academic unit prior to student registration.
The class schedule/registration system will denote which hybrid combination is applicable
to that particular class section.

Class is offered in ALL THREE modalities simultaneously - seated, online synchronous and online asynchronous. Students choose to attend any
class session in ANY ONE of the THREE modes.
The academic unit commits to offer all three modalities simultaneously for every scheduled
class session. Students may choose their attendance preference by each scheduled class
session. This modality offers the highest level of flexibility.

Both Trial Schedule Builder and the Class Schedule will continue to reflect a class's designated modality.
Synchronous classes require students and instructors to meet at scheduled times, either
in person or online, allowing for real-time interaction and immediate feedback. In
contrast, asynchronous classes do not have set meeting times; students access course
materials, lectures, and assignments, etc. online via the learning management system,
like Brightspace.
Modality is a decision made within the academic unit that offers the course. Not all
modalities will be available for every class.
Student should discuss desired academic experience as well as factors such as flexibility,
learning styles and resources with their advisor to determine the best modality.
International students must consult with their advisor and/or International Services
to ensure that selected modalities are compliant with immigration regulations.
