Request Library Instruction
Library Instruction is a vital part of the higher education learning experience, especially in this digital information age.
What can students learning during an instruction session?
- Determing the many print and online resources available to fulfill their research needs
- Forming research questions into manageable concepts
- Developing keywords and complex search statements
- Searching for books, articles, multimedia, etc.
- Differentiating between scholarly and popular publications
- Evaluating sources
- Citing sources
- Accessing the support resources available to them, including a research librarian
The following provides guidelines and descriptions of library instruction options:
Option 1: Video Tutorials
Beginning in late 2023, the Garnett Library will curate a collection of online video tutorials. Videos in this online collection will include instruction on how to use the library website, how to use Discover@MSU (EDS), and instruction on other popular databases.
Through this collection of video tutorials, we will also create on-demand content for specific subjects to meet your classroom needs. Please contact us at WPGarnettLibrary@missouristate.edu for specific requests and additional information.
Option 2: Introduction to Library Services
We are always available to either visit a class or provide a tour of Garnett Library.
These sessions take about 5-10 minutes and introduce your class to library services.
Option 3: Introduction to library resources
Tailored to your class needs, these sessions can provide a basic introduction to library
resources or can be based on a specific research assignment. The basic session includes
a website overview and instruction on how to use the MSU Library Catalog, request
books, and find articles in the library databases. The session based on a specific
research assignment includes databases and other resources focused on the assignment.
Option 4: Informal Library Instruction
These sessions can be as simple as helping students learn more about peer review process
and the difference between a scholarly journal and a popular magazine or search techniques
when looking for articles or online information.
To request library instruction:
- Submit your request at least 48 hours in advance of the chosen date to give Library staff adequate time to prepare.
- Supply alternate dates in the request form in case of scheduling conflicts.
- The requesting faculty member must attend the library instruction session unless extenuating circumstances arise, and the library has been notified ahead of time.
For the session tailored to a specific research assignment, please include a copy of the syllabus or assignment instructions on the request.
