Certified phlebotomy technicians make a difference every day!

Phlebotomy technicians are critical team members in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and blood donor centers. As new types of tests are developed and laboratory tech positions grow, it's an especially exciting time to begin a career in this thriving field. Some tasks phlebotomy technicians may perform include:

  • Drawing blood from patients and blood donors
  • Evaluating patients' ability to withstand the procedure and helping them feel comfortable
  • Explaining blood-drawing procedure to patients and answering questions
  • Performing basic point-of-care testing, such as reading blood glucose levels
  • Preparing blood, urine and other specimens for testing
  • Maintaining medical equipment such as needles, test tubes and blood vials

  1. When are your phlebotomy courses offered?
    1. This course is offered in the Fall and Spring, depending on enrollment throughout the year. If you are interested in taking the course, please contact the Office of Workforce Development at (417) 255-7784 or WPWorkforce@missouristate.edu.
  2. I want to register for the program. How do I get an application?
    1. Applications are available online at wp.missouristate.edu/workforce. Click on Non-Credit programs and under non-credit resources is a registration form. Complete and submit and you will receive a follow up phone call to discuss.
  3. When is the application deadline?
    1. Applications are due two weeks prior to the start of the program, which will be listed on our website.
  4. How many students do you accept?
    1. Our program will accept 10 students per cohort.
  5. Where will the course be taught?
    1. Classroom training will be held on campus of Missouri State University-West Plains, Looney Hall, 128 Garfield Avenue, West Plains, MO
  6. How much does the program cost?
    1. The program cost is currently $850, and this includes all associated background checks, drug testing, book, scrubs and tuition, certification exam fees, etc. This does not include the cost of any immunizations that may be necessary.
    2. Payment (cash or check) for class is made directly to the office of workforce development or by credit card through the university CashNet system.
  7. Is financial aid available?
    1. As non-credit training, federal financial aid is not available. There may be grants available through community resources, such as Ozark Action.
  8. How long is the program? What is the schedule like?
    1. This is an 8-week program. Prior to the start of the program, you will be required to attend an orientation from 9 am – noon on a Saturday.
    2. Six Saturday sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by 2-3 clinical days at Ozarks Healthcare.
  1. How do I apply to take my certification exam? How much does the exam cost?
    1. Notify the HIT Program Director (417-255-7786) once you have completed the online certification study modules and practice exams.
    2. Information will be emailed to the student for registration once the following is confirmed:
      1. Completion of sticks with course instructor
      2. Completion of online certification study modules and practice exams
    3. The online certification exam is taken at the MSU-WP Testing Center on campus.
    4. The certification exam fee is included in the fee paid for this course.
    5. The testing fee is included in the fee paid for this course.
  1. Does the exam fee include a free retake? If not, how much does it cost to retake the exam?
    1. The exam fee does not include a free retake. Students must pay for any retakes outside of the fee paid for this course.
    2. The fee to retake the exam is $160 and payable directly to the certification company.
    3. The fee to test in the MSU-WP testing center for retakes is $20 and payable by the student at the time of testing.
