Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?
I toured many different college campuses trying to find the one that stuck out the most to me. Before I attended my tour at Missouri State-West Plains, I wasn’t very hopeful. I had been let down by other colleges many times before. The moment my tour began, I knew this was the place for me. The students were friendly, the campus was easy to navigate, and the college itself wasn’t too far from my home.
How would you describe your experience here?
Very inviting! From the moment I stepped foot onto this campus, I felt welcome. Students were willing to answer any questions I had, and the teachers really showed just how much they cared about not only my grades, but also my well-being. Everyone seems to care for everyone else, and that’s what I love!
What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?
My favorite thing has been the freedom to manage my life the way I want. I got to choose what courses I wanted to take, how many classes I had each day, and what times I went to them. This gives me time to do what I want while also learning how to manage it wisely… an important skill for the future!
What has been your favorite course? And why?
My favorite course so far has been history with Dr. Jason McCollom. He provides plenty of resources and materials for us to use when studying for quizzes and working on assignments. He aids visual and auditory learners through lectures, reading and writing learners through textbook and notes, and kinesthetic learners through evaluating primary sources. No matter what learning style someone has, Dr. McCollom is sure to help them succeed through his various ways of teaching!
How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?
During my first day of school, I was not confident where my classes were located. Luckily, there were plenty of staff around to help students like me! They took the time and effort to stand outside during a heat wave to make sure students were able to figure out where they needed to be. That really shows that they care about us!
How did you choose your major?
I have always loved helping people and felt drawn to those that have been through some incredibly difficult things throughout their lives. I have chosen to major in human services so I can continue to help people when they need it most.
What have you learned at Missouri State-West Plains that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?
The William and Virginia Darr Honors Program has taught me the most about how to succeed in life. During my honors class, taught by the chancellor himself, Dr. Dennis Lancaster, we are encouraged to think outside of the box. There are truly no wrong answers in his class. He taught me to think differently and not cast a blind eye to what the world is throwing at me. I have become a confident and critical thinker thanks to him.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating from Missouri State-West Plains, I plan on transferring to the Springfield campus to further my education. After that, I plan to become either a psychologist, therapist or social worker. I’m not completely sure which I want to be more, but I know that I want to help as many disadvantaged children as possible, and I feel like this is the way for me to go!
