We understand that making a transition to the university can be a challenge. We are
here to assist you in taking on that challenge successfully.
Many people think you have to be at rock bottom before you decide to go to counseling,
but that is not true! Counseling is a great way to get back up when you have hit rock
bottom, but it can also be helpful when you decide that you are not exactly where
you want to be in life. Many people go to counseling because they want to learn more
about themselves, stop an unhealthy habit, improve their relationships, overcome a
difficult memory, or have more good days than bad days. Just know that no problem
is too big or too small to take with you to counseling.
Counseling is unique to everyone. Regardless of your background, symptoms, goals,
or characteristics, you will be met with kindness, support, and a judgment-free space.
Sometimes counseling is fun and full of laughter, other times counseling is difficult,
painful, and full of tears. Either way, your counselor is there to help you reach
your goals and help you feel welcome and accepted.
The Counseling Center is located in Garfield Hall, adjacent to the Student Recreation
Center and Hass-Darr Hall.
You will walk through the front door at Garfield Hall. Inside you will find our Case
Manager at a desk. Our Case Manager will check you in, help you complete any paperwork
that remains, or answer questions that you might have. Once you are checked in, your
counselor will come to greet you and guide you to an office where you are able to
talk freely and confidentially. Your counselor will review paperwork submitted, administrative
details about policies and procedures, and talk with you about the goals and expectations
you have for counseling. Your counselor recognizes that counseling can be intimidating
and difficult, so your comfort and safety is a priority in each session.
As a student at Missouri State University-West Plains, you automatically have student
fees as part of your tuition. These student fees apply towards the counseling services
available to you. Thanks to the student fees, counseling services on campus come at
no additional cost to you. Your tuition and fees will not change based on your decision
to receive counseling at the MSU-WP Counseling Center.
