WPO 5.09-2 English Proficiency
Purpose of Policy:
To assure that all applicants in a non-immigrant visa status have sufficient English
proficiency to successfully complete their program of study.
Proof of proficiency in English is required for all applicants in a non-immigrant
status if their primary language is not English. Applicants who have complete one
or more years of full-time secondary or post-secondary study in the US or a country
where English is the primary language, or at any other accredited secondary or post-secondary
institution where English is the primary language, or at any other accredited secondary
or post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction,
may be exempt, at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs.
Proof can be provided in one of four ways:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
The TOEFL score minimum requirements are 61 internet-based test. The applicant must
request original copies of these scores be sent to Missouri State-West Plains from
the Educational Testing Service.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
The IELTS score minimum requirement is 5.5 or higher. The applicant must request
the original copies of these scores be sent to Missouri State-West Plains from an
IELTS Test Center.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE)
The PTE score minimum requirement is 44 or higher. The applicant must request that
original copies of these scores be sent to Missouri State-West Plains from a PTE Academic
Test Center.
- Missouri State University’s English Language Institute (ELI) program.
Applicants may also meet the English language proficiency requirement through successful
completion of ELI Level 5.
Students who do not demonstrate proficiency as indicated may be evaluated individually
if extenuating circumstances exist.
